Penn 500S limited edition Rare, hard to find, in brand new, mint condition
PLEASE REED THIS AD FULLY
I have (2) brand new, mint, hard to find, limited special edition Penn 500S reels. I should be selling these at $100 each, but that is your gain. What makes these reels rare, hard to find, and very special is that they have some special features unlike the regular Jigmaster 500 reels past to present.
Firstly, they have solid separator bars and not separate chromed rods.
Secondly, they have red anodized AL spools.
Thirdly, they have the removable plate on the clicker side plate instead of on the gear plate side like all other past and present 500 models.
And lastly, they have oversize spools which will hold 400+ yards of 30# mono, unlike the regular 500 that only holds approx 300 yds of 30# mono.
They also have all user serviceable external grease fitting ports unlike the newer, post 1992, models that have done away with them making the bearings harder to service by the end user. Penn's idea to cut back on production costs.
These original 500S reels (shown in the ad photo) were only made somewhere in-between the years '78-80 in very limited production quantities only.
A cheaper 500S knock-off model reel was made for a few more years after 1980 I believe it was, (best as can be verified as remembered by an expert old timer named Jim that once worked for the Penn Reel Co in those earlier days), but this cheaper knock-off version 500S had a standard spool width holding only 300 yards mono line, and had the same removable gear side plate as the present day models.
One other thing many of you, 'so called Penn reel experts', don't know about is that the post 1992, or there abouts, Jigmaster 500 model series reels changed, and it had to do with the main gear/drag housing.
Penn, for some reason that even I will never quite figure out why they did it, took the main gear and added a spacer on the main gear. Possibly to prevent, what in their own engineering minds, the main gear from becoming frozen to the handle hub shaft. Big trade off for what was to follow.
Because of this change the 500 series reels, mainly 505 high speeds and 500 jigs as well, started to bind because of excessive main gear side play wobble while under load.
Casting was no problem, but on retrieve the reel would bind up as if there was line caught in-between the spool and frame gap. You could pre-spot the problem if you looked for small/micro brass filings around the main gear. You'd also see where the main gear was rubbing.
You would have to, in most cases, take apart the yoke/dog plate assy to find the problem. Most people won't attempt to do this as they would never get the reel back together again.
Penn tried to say that the spool axles were bent, but this was not true. What they were doing was silently replacing defective reels as they came in, and in cases where people knew what they were talking about, and pressed them, Penn was either replacing the reels one-for-one, or else upgrading them to the newer 555 series reels.
Email me if you have concerns or comments on this problem. As to the 500S reels, they didn't have this problem because they were pre 1992 and were a pretty good quality reel.
The buyer will pay for shipping, via USPS Priority mail, which will run approx $5 each per reel. This includes insurance and tracking confirm.
Note:
Present Ad Update - Both these collector reels were recently sold locally for the $70 asking price for both, but I feel the ad text info is very valuable to Penn reel fanatics. Hopefully you will feel the same, and you may contact me for further help or info as needed.
